Solid-State Drives (SSD)

Intel X-25M solid state drive in private investigator dictionarySolid-State Drives, or SSD, are a type of hard drive which does not contain a disc. SSDs store data in a similar fashion to memory, but typically have an on-board battery or capacitor, or don't require a persistent electrical current to retain data the way RAM does.

SSDs are becoming more common, particularly as high-speed boot drives containing all of the start-up files required by your operating system.

There are two main types of solid-state drive. The most common are based on flash memory, the same technology used in USB thumbsticks and consumer memory cards. A faster, more expensive option in the SSD market are drives which use RAM combined with a built-in battery or external power source along with backup storage to prevent data loss in the event of a power outage.

Solid State Drives pose a particular forensic challenge, one which the future of digital forensic analysis must address. If your investigation requires analysis of an SSD, Spindletop Investigations will discuss these challenges with you in advance.
